Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *puHšā́, from Proto-Indo-European *Péh₂-usōn, from *peh₂- (to protect). Traditionally explained as from the root पूष् (pūṣ, to nourish), a possibly fictitious alternative form of पुष् (puṣ).
