    • c. 500 BCE – 100 BCE, Rāmāyaṇa 6.131.35:
      नरा मोदकहस्ताश्च रामस्य पुरतो ययुः॥
      narā modakahastāśca rāmasya purato yayuḥ.
      And men, with modaks in hand, went in from of Rama.
    • c. 400 BCE, Mahābhārata 16.9.33.1:
      रथस्य पुरतो याति यः स चक्रगदाधरः।
      rathasya purato yāti yaḥ sa cakragadādharaḥ.
      The one who goes in front of the chariot is a bearer of mace and chakra.
    • Budhakauśika, Rāma Rakṣā Stotra 31:
      दक्षिणे लक्ष्मणो यस्य वामे तु जनकात्मजा । पुरतो मारुतिर्यस्य तं वन्दे रघुनन्दनम्‌ ॥
      dakṣiṇe lakṣmaṇo yasya vāme tu janakātmajā. purato mārutiryasya taṃ vande raghunandanam‌.
