Etymology

[edit]

Probably borrowed from a substrate, due to the numerous phonetic variations (with gemination, aspiration and/or retroflexion) of derivatives in descendants. Compare also Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀬 (pippaya, fly) and Hindi तितली (titlī, butterfly).
