From Proto-Indo-Iranian *paHdʰí, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂dʰí (2nd person singular imperative of *peh₂- (“to protect”)). Cognate with Old Persian 𐎱𐎠𐎮𐎹 (p-a-di-y /⁠pādiy⁠/, “protect!”, 2nd person singular imperative active).
