[edit]Borrowed from Portuguese padre, from Old Galician-Portuguese padre (“father”), from Latin pater, patrem (“father”), from Proto-Italic *patēr, from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (“father”). Cognate with Konkani पाद्रि (pādri), Gujarati પાદરી (pādrī), Bengali পাদ্রি (padri) and Hindi पादरी (pādrī).
