Etymology
[edit]Compound of पाटलि (pāṭali) + पुत्र (putra); the first element is perhaps related to पाटल (pāṭala). Previously known by names like पाटलिग्राम (pāṭaligrāma) and पाटलिपुर (pāṭalipura).
