Inherited from Prakrit *𑀧𑀲𑀆𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀯𑀇 (*pasaāttavaï), *𑀧𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀸𑀅𑀢𑀯𑀇 (*pacchāatavaï) (compare 𑀧𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀸𑀯𑀺𑀅 (pacchuttāvia, past participle)), from Sanskrit पश्चात् (paścā́t) +‎ तपति (tápati) (compare पश्चात्ताप (paścāttāpa, regret), New Sanskrit पश्चात्तपति (paścāttapati, regrets)).
