From Sanskrit *परिकोट (parikoṭa), from परि- (pari-, “around”) +‎ कोट (koṭa, “fort”); or from Sanskrit परिकूट (parikūṭa, “barrier or trench before a town's gate”); or from Sanskrit पुरकोट्ट (purakoṭṭa, “citadel”).
