Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *patˢtíš (“foot-soldier, infantryman, pedestrian”), from Proto-Indo-European *ped-tí-s (“pedestrian”), from *ped-. Cognate with Old Persian 𐎱𐎿𐎫𐎡 (p-s-t-i /pasti/, “infantryman, foot-soldier”), Ossetian фестӕг (festæg, “pedestrian”).
