Etymology
[edit]From an earlier form नद (nada) (with retroflexion due to substrate influence, perhaps from a Dravidian language; compare Tamil நாணல் (nāṇal), Kannada ನಳ್ಳು (naḷḷu, “reed”)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nada (compare Middle Persian nʾd (nāy, nay, “reed, cane”)), from Proto-Indo-European *nedo- (“reed”); outside of Indo-Iranian, compare Old Armenian նետ (net, “arrow”), Hittite [script needed] (nāta-, “redd, arrow, drinking straw”). See also the Sanskrit root नद् (nad, “to resound, vibrate, thunder”), which नड (naḍa) is likely a nominal formation of.[1]
