From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰwaníṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰwaníš, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰwen- (to make a noise). Cognate with Old English dyne (whence English din). Related to ध्वनति (dhvánati, to sound, roar).
