Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰwaníṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰwaníš, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰwen- (“to make a noise”). Cognate with Old English dyne (whence English din). Related to ध्वनति (dhvánati, “to sound, roar”).
