Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *Dyḗws ph₂tḗr. By surface analysis, द्यौस् (dyaús, nominative singular of द्यु (dyú, sky)) +‎ पितृ (pitṛ́, father). Cognate with Proto-Italic *djous patēr (whence Latin Iuppiter), Ancient Greek Ζεῦ πάτερ (Zeû páter), Illyrian *Dei-pátrous.
