Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀤𑀼𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀡 (dummaṇa), from Sanskrit दुर्मनस् (durmanas), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dušmánas, from Proto-Indo-European *dus-mén-os, from *men- (to think), with spontaneous shortening of the expected inherited long vowel in *दूमन (*dūman) possibly being semi-learned. Doublet of दुर्मना (durmanā) and दुश्मन (duśman).
