Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *tuHṣṇíHm, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tuHšníHm, from Proto-Indo-European *tuh₂s-n-, from *teh₂ws- (“to be quiet, be still”), itself perhaps from *tews- (“to be happy”).[1][2] Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬎𐬱𐬥𐬌̣𐬱𐬀𐬛- (tušnịšad-), Danish tyst (“quiet”),[3] Old Prussian tusnan (“still”), Luwian 𒌅𒄷𒅆𒀀𒄿 (tuḫušiya-, “to await, to wait and see”),[1] and Proto-Celtic *tausos (“deaf”).[2]
