[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Bengali টিকা (ṭika), from Sanskrit तिलक (tilaka, “tilak”). In medieval Bengal, among many techniques, variolaters would make an incision upon the forehead, in which smallpox powder was rubbed. Such marks were known as টিকা (ṭika) on account of the resemblance to a tilak. Compare also the borrowed टीकादार (ṭīkādār).

Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Perhaps a post-Vedic form of शिक्षा (śikṣā, “study; knowledge”); the consonant shift from ś > ț is also seen in टक्किबुद्ध (ṭakkibuddha, “Takkibuddha”). Alternatively, derived from दीपिका (dīpikā, “light, lamp”).
