[edit]Derived from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀻𑀯𑀸 (jīvā), 𑀚𑀻𑀆 (jīā, “bowstring”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-), from Sanskrit जीवा (jīvā). Compare Punjabi ਜੇਉਡ਼ੀ (jeuṛī), ਜੇਉਡ਼ਾ (jeuṛā), Nepali जिउरि (jiuri), Assamese জোঁৰ (zü̃r) and Gujarati જેવરી (jevrī).
