Etymology
[edit]Uncertain.
- According to Turner, probably of substrate origin. The original Ṛgvedic meaning appears to be "dull" or "foolish".
- According to proponents of Fortunatov's law, possibly inherited from Proto-Indo-European *gél-dʰ-u- (“cold”) via Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́álḍʰuṣ. This would connect this term with जड (jaḍa) (which more clearly means "cold"), as well as English cold and Latin gelidus.
