Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘔𑘰𑘪𑘰 (chāvā, baby animal), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀯 (chāva, baby animal), from Sanskrit शावक (śāvaka, the young of any animal).
