Etymology
[edit]Probably borrowed from the Dravidian word for "bark (of a tree)"; compare Tamil சொலி (coli, “bark of a tree; the inner fibrous covering of bamboo”), Malayalam തൊലി (toli, “skin, peel, bark”). However, the discrepancy between the "l" and the "ḍ" between the Dravidian and Indo-Aryan forms is difficult to explain.
