Etymology
[edit]- From चोर (cor, “thief”) + -टा (-ṭā, pleonastic suffix).[1] Compare alternative form चोरटा (corṭā).
- From Prakrit *𑀘𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*cŏṭṭa, “thief”), derived from Dravidian. Compare Tamil சொட்டு (coṭṭu, “to knock on the head; to cheat; to snatch away”), சுற்று (cuṟṟu, “to move around in an orbit; to get by trickery; to steal away”).[2]
