Etymology
[edit]From an early derived form of Proto-Indo-Iranian *kanH- (“to dig”) + a suffix *आल (āla) of uncertain origin. Compare Avestan 𐬗𐬁𐬝 (cāt̰, “a well pit”), Bactrian σαδο (sado, “a well”), Persian چال (čâl, “pit, hole”).
