Inherited from Prakrit *𑀕𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*gŏṭṭa). It is unclear whether the senses "hem" and "gamepiece" have the same etymology (e.g. Dasa separates them while McGregor does not); see the Prakrit term for more discussion.
