Inherited from Prakrit 𑀅𑀁𑀘𑀮 (aṃcala), from Sanskrit अञ्चल (añcala). Compare Awadhi आँचर (ā̃car), Braj आँचर (ā̃car). Doublet of अँचला (ãclā) and अंचल (añcal).
