[edit]Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀁𑀣𑀇 (gaṃthaï), 𑀕𑀁𑀞𑀇 (gaṃṭhaï), from Sanskrit ग्रन्थयति (granthayati), ग्रन्थति (granthati). Compare Gujarati ગાંઠવું (gā̃ṭhvũ), Hindustani گان٘ٹْھنا (gā̃ṭhnā) / गाँठना (gā̃ṭhnā), Sindhi ڳَنڍَڻُ / ॻंढणु, Punjabi ਗੰਢਣਾ (gaṇḍhṇā) / گَنڈھݨا (ganḍhṇā), Nepali गाँथ्नु (gā̃thnu), गाँठिनु (gā̃ṭhinu), Maithili गाँथब (gā̃thab) / 𑒑𑒰𑒿𑒟𑒥 (gā̃thaba), Odia ଗାନ୍ଥିବା (gānthibā), ଗାଣ୍ଠିବା (gāṇṭhibā), Bengali গাঁথা (gãtha), Dhivehi ގަތަނީ (gatanī).
