Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *kʰād-, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷh₂ed-.[1]
Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬍-𐬑𐬀𐬛𐬀- (vī-xada-, “to squeeze apart”), Parthian 𐫟𐫀𐫉𐫏𐫗𐫅 (xʾzynd, “to devour”), modern Persian خاییدن (xâyidan),[2] Old Armenian խածանեմ (xacanem),[3] and Proto-Slavic *kǫsàti (“to bite”).
