From Proto-Indo-Iranian *kʰād-, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷh₂ed-.[1]

Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬍-𐬑𐬀𐬛𐬀- (vī-xada-, to squeeze apart), Parthian 𐫟𐫀𐫉𐫏𐫗𐫅 (xʾzynd, to devour), modern Persian خاییدن (xâyidan),[2] Old Armenian խածանեմ (xacanem),[3] and Proto-Slavic *kǫsàti (to bite).
