Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀼𑀟 (kukkuḍa), from Sanskrit कुक्कुट (kukkuṭa). Cognate to Odia କୁକୁଡ଼ା (kukuṛā), Assamese কুকুৰা (kukura), and Bengali কুঁকড়া (kũkoṛa).
