Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. According to Mayrhofer, probably borrowed from a substrate language.[1] Perhaps from original *kīr-tá- and thus somehow related to कृमि॑ (kṛ́mi, worm).

Unrelated to Ancient Greek κίς (kís, weevil).
