[edit]Etymology
[edit]- Borrowed from Classical Persian کاروان (kārwān), from Middle Persian [script needed] (kʾlwʾn' /kārawān/), from Old Persian 𐎣𐎠𐎼 (k-a-r /kāra-/, “the people, army”), from Proto-Indo-European *ker- (“army”). Doublet of कारज़ार (kārzār) > Persian کارزار (kārzār), from same Proto-Indo-European root.
- Sense as “caravan (vehicle)” conflated with English caravan, a cognate.
