Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁ĺ̥-ḱo-s, from *h₁el- (deer, horned wild animal). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἔλαφος (élaphos, red deer), English elk. Also related to ऋश्य (ṛśya).
