[edit]Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘄𑘝𑘯 (utaḷa), probably from Prakrit 𑀉𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀮 (utthala, “sandhill, dry sandy place”), from Sanskrit उत्स्थल (utsthala, “name of an island”). Compare Hindustani اُتْھلَا (uthlā) / उथला (uthlā).
