Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀉𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀸𑀯𑀮 (uttāvala), from Sanskrit *उत्तापल (uttāpala, impetuous), from उत्ताप (uttāpa) +‎ -ल (-la).[1]
