Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘄𑘘𑘜𑘹𑘽 (uṭaṇeṃ), from Sanskrit उद्वर्तन (udvartana). Compare Gujarati ઉટણું (uṭaṇũ), Hindustani اُبْٹَن (ubṭan) / उबटन (ubṭan), Vaghri ઊબટણ (ūbaṭaṇ), Sindhi اُبٽَڻُ / उबटणु, Punjabi ਵਟਣਾ (vaṭṇā) / وَٹݨا (vaṭṇā), Odia ବାଟଣ (bāṭaṇa), ବାଟଣା (bāṭaṇā), Maithili उबटन (ubᵊṭan) / 𑒅𑒥𑒙𑒢 (ubaṭana).
