Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *HiHsáH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HiHsáH, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂iHséh₂ (shaft). Cognate with Ancient Greek οἴαξ (oíax, handle of rudder, tiller, helm;), οἰήϊον (oiḗïon, handle of rudder), Hittite 𒄭𒅖𒊭𒀭 (ḫi-iš-ša- /ḫišša-/, carriage pole), Old English ār (whence English oar). Compare also Finnish aisa (shaft; pole), borrowed from Baltic, whence borrowed from the Slavic s-stem (compare Slovene ojẹ̑ (thill), genitive ojẹ̑sa).
