Etymology
[edit]A late Vedic corruption of an earlier *ārdhyá, which was the vṛddhi derivative of a formation of ऋध् (ṛdh, “to grow, to prosper”); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃erdʰ-.

- yathā vai samrāṇmahāntamadhvānameṣyanrathaṃ vā nāvaṃ vā samādadītaivamevaitābhirupaniṣadbhiḥ samāhitātmāʼsyevaṃ vṛndāraka āḍhyaḥ sannadhītaveda uktopaniṣatka ito vimucyamānaḥ kva gamiṣyasīti nāhaṃ tadbhagavanveda yatra gamiṣyāmītyatha vai teʼhaṃ tadvakṣyāmi yatra gamiṣyasīti bravītu bhagavāniti
- [Yājñavalkya said:] “As indeed, oh great king, he who is going to make a long journey would take up a chariot or a ship to himself, just so you are the one whose self (ātman-) is equipped with these profound theories (upaniṣad-). Standing at the top [of the people] [and] wealthy as you are, where will you go as the one who has learned the Veda [and] been taught the Upaniṣad, when you are released from this world?”. [Janaka said:] “I don’t know, sir, where I will go to”. [Yājñavalkya said:] “Then I will verily tell you where you will go to”. [Janaka said:] “You, sir, shall please speak”.
