Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘀𑘑𑘰𑘪 (aghāva), 𑘁𑘑𑘰𑘌 (āghāo), 𑘁𑘑𑘰𑘪 (āghāva), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀅𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀸𑀑 (aggāo), ablative singular of 𑀅𑀕𑁆𑀕 (agga, “beginning, top”), from Sanskrit अग्र (ágra). Cognate with Gujarati અગાઉ (agāu), Hindi अगाऊ (agāū), Punjabi ਅਗਾਊਂ (agāū̃) / اگاؤں.
