[edit]First attested as Old Marathi 𑘀𑘚𑘜𑘹 (aḍaṇe), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀅𑀟𑁆 (*aḍ) (compare Kannada ಅಡ್ಡ (aḍḍa), Tamil அடை (aṭai)). Related to अडकणे (aḍakṇe). Compare Gujarati અડવું (aḍavũ), Hindustani اَڑْنَا (aṛnā) / अड़ना (aṛnā), اَڑ (aṛ) / अड़ (aṛ), Punjabi ਅੜਨਾ (aṛanā) / اڑنا.
