- Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑀁𑀩𑀮 (kaṃbala), from Sanskrit कम्बल (kambala), likely from Munda (Compare Santali ᱠᱚᱢᱵᱨᱚ (kômbrô)).
- Borrowed from Gujarati કાંબળી (kā̃baḷī) or Marathi कांबळी (kāmbḷī).
