Etymology

From Aramaic תְּמָנַעֵסְרֶא (təmānaʿesrē). Equivalent to ܬܡܵܢܹܐ (tmānē, “eight”) +‎ ܥܸܣܲܪ (ʿisar, “ten”); compare Arabic ثَمَانِيَ عَشْرَةَ (ṯamāniya ʕašrata) and Hebrew שְׁמוֹנֶה עֶשְׂרֵה (sh'moné 'esré).
