Etymology

[edit]

Equivalent to being named after the people from whom silk was obtained, ܫܝܼܪ (šīr, Seres, Northern China) +‎ -ܝܐ (-āyā, the attributive adjective ending); compare Mandaic ࡔࡉ࡚ࡓࡀࡉࡀ (/šērāyā/), Arabic سِيرَاء (sīrāʔ), Ge'ez ሢራይ (śiray) and Ancient Greek Σήρ (Sḗr).
