Assyrian Neo-Aramaic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Aramaic שִּׁירָיָא (šīrāyā, “silk; a kind of silk garment”), from Chinese 絲 (MC si). Equivalent to being named after the people from whom silk was obtained, ܫܝܼܪ (šīr, “Seres, Northern China”) + -ܝܐ (-āyā, the attributive adjective ending); compare Mandaic ࡔࡉ࡚ࡓࡀࡉࡀ (/šērāyā/), Arabic سِيرَاء (sīrāʔ), Ge'ez ሢራይ (śiray) and Ancient Greek Σήρ (Sḗr).
