Inherited from Aramaic שׁוּלְטָנָא (šūlṭānā); compare Hebrew שִׁלְטוֹן (shiltón, rulership, authority) and also borrowed into Arabic سُلْطَان (sulṭān, Sultan). The second and third meanings are learned semantic loans from Classical Syriac.
