Inherited from Aramaic שׁוּלְטָנָא (šūlṭānā); compare Hebrew שִׁלְטוֹן (shiltón, “rulership, authority”) and also borrowed into Arabic سُلْطَان (sulṭān, “Sultan”). The second and third meanings are learned semantic loans from Classical Syriac.
