From ܩܫܝܫܐ (qaššīšāʾ, elder), from the root ܩ-ܫ-ܫ (q-š-š) related to growing old + the abstract noun ending -ܘܬܐ (-ūṯāʾ). Compare Hebrew קְשִׁישׁוּת (qəšîšûṯ).
