Probably from the older form *ܩܵܢܸܨ (*qāniṣ), Borrowed from Akkadian kalāṣu (“to contract oneself up, roll up, shrivel, wrinkle”), possibly related to Akkadian ganāṣu (“to wrinkle the nose, sneer”) (and if so, a doublet of ܓܵܢܸܨ (gāniṣ, “to smile”)). Compare Arabic قلص.
