Etymology

ܩ ܛ ܦ (q ṭ p)
1 term

Uncertain. This pattern matches the Arabic and rarely Syriac diminutive pattern (Syriac which usually has a deletion of the /u/, but kept in ܥܘܼܙܲܠܵܐ (young gazelle), if not borrowed from Arabic). Some dialects pronounce this word with /f/ suggesting a borrowing, or alternatively, influence from Arabic قَطَفَ (qaṭafa). Still, this word is not found in Arabic and it is not certain why the diminutive structure is used for this meaning. Also found in Mandaic. (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
