From Aramaic סַיְפָּא (saypā); related to Arabic سَيْف (sayf), Hebrew סַיִף (sayif), Amharic ሰይፍ (säyf) and Ancient Greek ξίφος (xíphos). The latter noun is an occupational noun derived from the former, and the proper noun is from the Western Syriac or Turoyo vocalisation.
