Derived terms
[edit]Etymology 2
[edit]Debated:
- Probably from Ancient Greek [Term?], and also attested in Classical Syriac as an irregular variant of ܣܘܼܪܝܵܝܵܐ (suryāyā). The standard form itself is first attested in the writings of Philoxenus of Mabbug in the 5th-6th century, strengthening the Greek theory, which most modern scholars support and what Syriac writers themselves attest to. However, the deletion of the first /j/ would not have a clear explanation, which is also in Turoyo ܣܘܪܳܝܐ (suroyo).
- Possibly directly from Akkadian 𒀾𒋗𒊏𒅀 (Aššūrāyu), likely via the variants assūrāyu (Attested in Neo-Assyrian) or sūrāyu (7th century BC).
Doublet of ܐܵܫܘܿܪܵܝܵܐ (āšōrāyā), ܐܵܬ݂ܘܿܪܵܝܵܐ (āṯōrāyā), and ܣܘܼܪܝܵܝܵܐ (suryāyā, “Syrian”).
