[edit]Derived from ܥܝܢܐ (ʿaynā(ʾ), “eye; spring”). Compare Arabic مَعِين (maʕīn) and Hebrew מַעְיָן (maʿyān). The sense of "rhombus" is a calque of Arabic مُعَيَّن (muʕayyan).
