  • From Akkadian 𒉘𒈨𒌍 (/⁠maddattu, middattu⁠/, measure of capacity, container).
  • From ܕܢܐ (dannāʾ, jar, urn), from Akkadian 𒂁𒆗𒉡 (/⁠dannu⁠/, storage vat mostly for storing beer and wine).
