From Aramaic חַסָּא (ḥassā), from Akkadian 𒌑𒄭𒄑𒊬 (ḫassū, lettuce), from Sumerian 𒄭𒄑𒊬 (ḫi-izsar /⁠hiz⁠/, lettuce); cognates with Arabic خَسّ (ḵass), Hebrew חַסָּה (khása).
