[edit]Semi-learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܚܠܦ ܫܡܐ (ḥəlāp̄ šəmā), equivalent to a compound of ܚܠܵܦ (ḥlāp, “instead of, in place of”) + ܫܸܡܵܐ (šimmā, “noun”).
