Etymology

Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Aramaic חְדַעֵסְרֵא (ḥəḏaʿesrē). Equivalent to ܚܕ݂ܵܐ (ḥḏā, one) +‎ ܥܸܣܲܪ (ˁissar, ten); compare Arabic إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ (ʔiḥdā ʕašrata) and Hebrew אַחַת עֶשְׂרֵה (akhát 'esré).
